What's "Melodifestivalen"?

Melodifestivalen (literally "The melody festival") is a Swedish song contest. It's organized by SVT (Swedish television) and SR (Swedish radio).
The winner of Melodifestival represents Sweden in Eurovision Song Contest.

The old (2002 - 2008) Melodifestivalen has got four semifinals (deltävlingen), a Second Chance round (Andra Chansen) and a final (Globen).
In each semifinal there are eight performers, and all the songs must be performed live.
Three songs are out after a first round of voting. The top2 songs in the second round of voting go to Globen. 3rd and 4th go to Andra Chansen.

From 2009 everything will change! During the semifinal four out of eight songs will pass to the second round. There will be a match between two songs and they will be the first versus the fourth in the chart and the second versus the third.
The winners will go to Globen, the losers will go to Andra Chansen!
Andra Chansen will have four matches like the second part of the semifinals: the songs will battle in pairs, the winners of the first and second matches will battle again, as like as the winners of the third and fourth matches. The two winners will go to Globen.
But! Don't be upset if your favourite song won't pass to Globen: an expert and international jury will pick the eleventh song for the final!
